Congratulations on joining the SUNY Potsdam community!
Starting college is exciting, but it can also bring many questions. We have put together some helpful information for you below regarding Orientation.
FAQs
Yes. NSO is required for all new students, including commuter and transfer students. Orientation helps you prepare for classes, meet other students and learn about campus resources. Only students enrolled in fully online degree programs are exempt.
You will receive your NSO schedule when you check in on Friday morning. Your schedule includes:
- Your small group assignment
- Required session schedule
- Information about optional social activities
- Physical copies of campus resource materials
After you confirm your enrollment at SUNY Potsdam, you should be sure to do the following things to prepare for NSO.
- Check your Potsdam email address at least three times per week.
- Complete your New Student Checklist
- Ask questions if you are unsure about something
Bring items you may need for a full day of activities. We suggest:
- Wearing comfortable clothing and shoes that you can move around in
- Carrying a water bottle
- Packing weather appropriate accessories like sunscreen, sunglasses, a sweatshirt, umbrella, etc.
- Bringing something to take notes with
Your family is welcome (and encouraged!) to help you move in and get settled and then attend Sundaes with Suzanne. At the conclusion of that program, families and supporters should plan to depart. There are no other scheduled activities for non-students.
Check-in details, including location and time, will be shared by email before move-in day.
Orientation sessions are important for your success, and you should make every effort to attend all required sessions. There is time in the schedule for you to run errands and take care of any outstanding business. If you miss a required session, please talk with your Orientation Leader, who will help you get caught up.
