"Pluralidad converges my parallel lives as a musician and visual artist. I am a mixed-race artist of Puerto Rican, Colombian, and Jewish descent. My work not only reflects my multidisciplinary artistic practice but also the multiplicity of my identity. Speaking in multiple languages (Spanish and English) mirrors the many different languages I speak within music and visual art.

My artwork consists of large-scale mixed media collages unified through illustration and portraiture. Vibrant fields of color and texture form the ground, over which graphite, pen, and ink drawings are superimposed. Drawing is my anchor and inheritance: I come from a family of illustrators who taught me draftsmanship, anatomy, foreshortening, perspective, and the discipline of looking closely at the human figure. My musical practice—as a conductor, composer, vocalist, pianist, electronic musician, and multi-instrumentalist across genres —deeply informs how I build images. The illustrated forms in my artwork move across and through layered acrylics, paper, fabric and more, binding disparate surfaces into a single visual rhythm, the way a melody moves through orchestration.

These images hold multiple personal histories at once, not as fragments to be resolved or whittled down, but as voices that inform and embrace one another. This exhibition is an offering from a multi-hyphenate practice - one that understands identity, medium, and form as layered, resonant, and inseparable." ~ Raquel Acevedo Klein ’16
