SUNY Potsdam Hosts Hundreds of Athletes & 17 Ice Hockey Contests for Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games

The North Country Welcomes 1,500 Elite College Athletes from Around the World for Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games 

The State University of New York at Potsdam has welcomed nearly 500 ice hockey players from around the world, along with coaches and support staff, for the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games. SUNY Potsdam is hosting the Athletes Village for the World University Games in Knowles Hall, along with 17 hockey games that are being played in the Maxcy Hall Ice Arena. 

From Jan. 12 to 22, New York State is hosting 1,500 elite college athletes from 600 universities and 50 nations as they compete across 12 winter sports and 86 medal events. The majority of events are taking place at the newly-renovated Lake Placid Olympic facilities and other ORDA venues including Mt. Van Hoevenberg, Gore, and Whiteface Mountain. Nearby, the Saranac Lake Civic Center is holding 24 curling games while to the west, SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University are hosting 45 ice hockey face-offs.  

SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall Ice Arena will host 17 preliminary round ice hockey contests as part of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games.

Lake Placid’s Main Street is closed off for the duration of the Games for theFISU Games Festival, which is hosting local vendors, interactive winter sports activities, and free concerts every night.

Tickets are now on sale for the hockey games and all other events. All games will stream live online at, with the finals being broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+.

The FISU World University Games is the largest winter multi-sport collegiate athletic event in the world. Collegiate athletes between the ages of 17 and 25 are eligible to enter.
