SUNY Potsdam recently welcomed New York State Assemblyman Scott Gray to campus for a firsthand look at the extensive renovations and upgrades underway at the Maxcy Hall Athletic Complex, one of the College’s premier facilities for athletics, recreation and student wellness.

During the visit, Assemblyman Gray toured several key areas of the complex, including the Maxcy Hall Ice Arena, Fieldhouse and the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. He also stopped by the women's hockey and men's basketball team locker rooms, and received an overview of future enhancements planned for outdoor athletic facilities, including upgrades to athletic fields and turf field restrooms.

"Assemblyman Gray's visit provided an opportunity to showcase the significant investments being made in our athletic and recreational facilities and to share our vision for the future of Maxcy Hall," said Director of Athletics Mark Misiak, who led the tour. "These improvements are creating more accessible, modern and welcoming spaces that enhance the student experience and support the success of both our student athletes and the broader campus community."

Assemblyman Gray was joined on his visit by his Chief of Staff James D. Uhlinger III, and Community Liaison Brian Murray ’87.

Assemblyman Gray said the renovations reflect SUNY Potsdam's commitment to providing high-quality facilities that support student learning, health and engagement.

"Seeing the progress underway at Maxcy Hall was truly impressive," Gray said. "These upgrades will serve students, athletes and the community for years to come, and they demonstrate SUNY Potsdam's ongoing commitment to investing in spaces that enrich campus life and create opportunities for success."

The tour highlighted the significant progress that has been made as part of the ongoing revitalization of Maxcy Hall, home of the Potsdam Bears. Thanks to support from the SUNY Construction Fund, recent improvements have included the installation of a new four-sided color LED scoreboard in the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium and a comprehensive rehabilitation of the building’s second floor. Renovations have also included new flooring, ceilings and lighting, with updated furnishings and consistent SUNY Potsdam branding also being incorporated throughout the space.

Accessibility and student experience have also been key priorities in the project. All first- and second-floor restrooms have been upgraded, and a new elevator has been added to ensure compliance with accessibility standards.

Additional enhancements include the creation of a new bouldering cave in a former dance studio area, while the climbing wall in the Fieldhouse has been refurbished as part of the broader improvements.

The final phase of the renovation project is now nearing completion. An indoor turf field is scheduled to be installed in the Fieldhouse during the winter months, along with several finishing improvements that will complete the transformation of the facility.

The renovations at Maxcy Hall represent a major investment in the future of SUNY Potsdam athletics and recreation, ensuring that students and visitors alike can benefit from modern, accessible and versatile facilities for years to come.

In addition to its NCAA Division III teams, SUNY Potsdam offers club sports, intramurals and fitness programming at Maxcy Hall, and the facility also supports programming for the College’s degrees in physical education and exercise science, among others.
