Department of Advanced Studies in Education Visiting Assistant Professor Vacancy

The Department of Advanced Studies in Education is accepting on-line applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor to support its M.S.Ed. Special Education, Certificate of Advanced Studies in Inclusive and Special Education, and special education courses for general education teacher certification programs. 

This position is anticipated to start for the Fall 2023 semester. With a focus on enhancing diversity and equity for all students, this position offers a unique opportunity to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses for initial teacher certification programs and to supervise clinical field experiences.  The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting curricula and teaching courses for SUNY Potsdam’s special education and general education programs during the fall and spring semesters. Additional duties include participation in department meetings, program assessment, and partnership advisory committee. Opportunities to teach during summer semesters and – by work for hire contract – to develop hybrid and on-line courses are also available. 

Requirements of the position include: an earned doctorate or ABD in special education from an accredited institution; or M.S.Ed. in special education with significant experience in inclusive classroom teaching and/or special education administration considered; at least three years of successful teaching of students with diverse abilities; communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues; a professional commitment to creating, fostering, and sustaining an inclusive environment in higher education and public school settings; and experience teaching and/or developing online courses.  

Preferred qualifications include: experience teaching special education or related courses at the college level; potential for collaboration in special education research; experience with, or demonstrated capacity for, teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds to advance the College’s mission of equity and excellence; involvement in professional organizations and professional development activities; effective use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) education platforms (e.g., D2L/Brightspace, Google Classroom), digital technology and assistive technology learning tools, and campus-based technologies (e.g., Microsoft Office); experience collaborating with various departments or community partners to foster success of underrepresented groups; and experience with higher education accreditation and assessment, specifically with Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
