SUNY Potsdam Approved to Offer New Bachelor of Science in Education Degree in Physical Education (Pre-K to 12)

SUNY Potsdam is proud to announce the launch of its new Bachelor of Science in Education degree (B.S.Ed.) in physical education, designed to prepare students to become certified teachers for grades Pre-K to 12. This rigorous program will blend physical education with immersive field experiences, equipping graduates to inspire lifelong wellness and active lifestyles in diverse school settings.

“At SUNY Potsdam, we are committed to preparing educators who will make a meaningful difference in the lives of students. The launch of our new physical education program reflects our dedication to promoting wellness and active lifestyles in schools across New York State and beyond. This degree will empower future teachers to inspire healthy habits and foster inclusive, engaging learning environments for all children,” said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. Suzanne R. Smith.

The physical education program will emphasize hands-on learning, with coursework and field experiences that teach candidates how to plan, implement and assess developmentally appropriate lessons aligned with state and national standards. Students will gain expertise in teaching healthy lifestyle behaviors and a wide range of physical activities, including fitness, sports, gymnastics, rhythm, dance and game skills.

The new degree will also include wilderness education coursework, giving students the chance to gain outdoor adventure skills and build confidence, all while immersed in the beauty of the Adirondacks. SUNY Potsdam’s program will also offer students the opportunity to specialize in a focus area of interest, such as outdoor leadership, health or coaching.

Admission to SUNY Potsdam’s physical education program is now open. To apply and find more information, visit www.potsdam.edu/PE.

"Our B.S.Ed. in physical education will offer a unique blend of pedagogy and training, combined with hands-on experience in local schools. Students will graduate ready to teach, lead, and advocate for lifelong wellness. We are excited to welcome the next generation of educators who will help shape healthier communities,” said Assistant Professor Samuel Santich.

Upon completion, candidates will meet the academic requirements for initial certification in the field of physical education for grades Pre-K to 12. The program is nationally accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

Graduates of the program will be prepared to lead in the classroom and inspire students to adopt healthy habits and active lifestyles. With a growing demand for qualified physical education teachers, this degree offers a pathway to a rewarding career that makes a lasting impact.

Student teaching field work and the culminating student teaching internship requirements are coordinated by the SUNY Potsdam Center for School Partnerships and Teacher Certification, which works with candidates to find appropriate placements with schools across the state and beyond.

The School of Education and Professional Studies at SUNY Potsdam has been preparing educators for more than 200 years.
