TRiO Program Academic Counselor Vacancy

The Research Foundation for SUNY, a private, not-for-profit Corporation invites applications for an Academic Counselor (local title of Program Counselor/Peer Mentor Coordinator) for TRiO. This position is grant-funded through the US Department of Education.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:
1. Assessing the needs of participants;
2. Providing personal, financial, academic, career and graduate school counseling to participants and maintaining records of the services provided to each participant;
3. Presenting workshops in response to participant needs;
4. Coordinating and evaluating a peer mentoring program;
5. Attending Open House and other events outside of normal business hours ( as required);
6. Working with the Project Director to evaluate counseling and mentoring components;
7. Coordinating with faculty and referral agencies to ensure participants' optimal adjustment to college and academic progress;
8. Serving as academic advisor to TRIO SSS participants with undeclared majors, and;
9. Working with TRIO SSS staff members to organize academic/cultural enrichment events.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
• The candidate must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in counseling, social work,
education, higher education administration or an appropriate field related to program
objectives;
• Experience working with students at the college level (particularly disadvantaged
students and students with disabilities);
• Experience with assessment tools;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and;
• Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
• Experience in using the Microsoft suite of products;
• Knowiedge of Banner and BDMS or similar database software, and;
• Experience in working with federally funded programs, especially TRIO.
