Internships and Applied Learning are central to all the programs in the Department of Public Health and Human Performance.Exercise Science Majors are required to complete a 3-credit internship in the field, and Public Health Majors complete a 12-credit capstone internship at the end of their undergraduate career.Public Health interns have served agencies across areas of the field including sexual health, nutrition, access to healthcare, maternal health, drug and alcohol treatment and recovery, and more. Healing Through Dance

Intertwining her academic interests in dance and psychology, Maribel Flores ’20 graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a singular vision for her future—to help people dealing with trauma through dance movement therapy. “I’ve always been curious about what combining dance and psychology would look like. This field is literally that, a nice balance of movement, psychology and studying human behavior. We use it to promote emotional, social, and cognitive states of wellbeing,” Flores explained.

IRB Committee MembershipThe IRB is composed of at least 5 members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The board promotes complete and adequate review of research activities conducted at SUNY Potsdam. Additional members may be appointed to enhance the diversity of the committee with a maximum committee size of 10. Rising on the Wings of Dance

It’s been a busy four years since the shadow of Zoe Walders ’16 spun through the performance spaces of the SUNY Potsdam Department of Theatre and Dance. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance, Walders immediately jumped into a performance role at Jacobs Pillow dance center in Beckett, Mass., and acted in the Rochester-based independent student film “It Didn’t Mean Anything.” From there, the dance and choreography work arrived on a steady tide, immersing Walders in 14 different endeavors through 2018-19.

Laura Wessing ’15

It’s hard to imagine a student doing more with their time at SUNY Potsdam than alumna Laura Wessing ’15. In four years, she graduated summa cum laude with a double major in computer science and mathematics, as well as getting a master’s degree in math through the BA / MA program. Wessing also completed three internships, two of which were with the U.S. Air Force. She now leads the quantum algorithms team at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y.—overseeing complex research on quantum bits.
