SUNY Native American Initiative Northern Consortium

About the SUNY Native American Initiative

The Native American Program at SUNY Potsdam is supported by the SUNY Native American Initiative, a system-wide commitment to expanding higher education access and success for Indigenous students across New York State. Through this initiative, SUNY supports two regional consortium hubs: the Northern Consortium at SUNY Potsdam and the Western Consortium at SUNY Fredonia.

Our Partnership

As the home campus for the Northern Consortium, SUNY Potsdam works in close partnership with the members and families of Akwesasne as well as Indigenous students across the North Country and beyond.

Together with regional post-secondary institutions, tribal education departments, and community leaders, we work to address the unique educational priorities of Native American students.

Our Mission & Goals

The overall goal of the Northern Consortium centers on key milestones in a student's educational journey:

  • Recruitment & Access: Creating clear pathways and pre-college programs for high school students.

  • Retention & Belonging: Providing wrap-around support services to ensure students feel supported throughout their time on campus.

  • Graduation & Success: Helping students reach degree completion and transition into meaningful careers or graduate studies.
