Organization
About the Organization
The organization is a worldwide aluminum smelter that is one of the last smelters in the United States. There are three main departments in order for this to run smoothly. They are electrode, pot rooms and cast house. This is how the smelter operates.
Duties
I was an EHS intern and my duties were to sample data and record that data. This data was used to make sure that the workers were not put in dangerous situations in their work. I worked what is called a 9/80 schedule, which is a 9-hour day Monday - Friday with every other Friday off. This was a paid internship.
Summary
Throughout the summer, I was on the EHS team. I did a lot of sampling, which included noise and air sampling. These were personal samples to see what the workers were exposed to on a day-to-day basis. I also was able to be a part of tests like particulate tests and also SO2 test. Another test I was part of was we sampled dust in the plant and sent it away to a lab to be tested to find out if they were combustible. I also was a part of safety walks that happened every day.
