Office Functions

The office is divided into three main areas: 1. Pre-award (funding source identification, proposal preparation and submission, etc.); 2. Post-award (sponsored funds administration); and 3. Research Compliance (IRB, IACUC, Conflict of Interest, Export Controls). Within these areas we offer the following general types of services:

Pre-Award:

  • Identification of funding sources
  • Proposal and budget development
  • Proposal review and editorial assistance
  • Proposal submission

Post-Award:

  • Account establishment
  • Assistance with sponsor guidelines/requirements
  • Payroll
  • Purchasing
  • Time and effort reporting

Research Compliance

  • Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
  • Conflict of Interest
  • Export Controls
  • Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) for National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Proposals

Pre-Award

1. Assistance with the identification of funding sources:

  • SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network) searches and training
  • Work with CCI to identify grant opportunities and provide workshops/training.

2. Assistance with proposal preparation and development

When a match is found between a faculty member's interest and the program of a potential sponsor, the Office will secure the guidelines and application materials from the sponsor. While writing the proposal is the responsibility of the faculty member, the RSPO will help with the budget preparation, edit and critique the proposal, and ensure that the requirements of the sponsor and the university are met.

Once a faculty member decides to prepare a grant proposal, inform the RSPO, and update the Office on the progress of the proposal. This promotes coordination among faculty with related interests, ensures the proposal is being developed consistent with sponsor guidelines, facilitates securing campus approvals for proposal submission to the sponsor, and results in a timely competitive proposal.

Once an award has been made, the RSPO provides the administrative services necessary to carry out the project. Personnel services include payroll and the maintenance of time and effort records. Other services include account establishment, purchasing, the monitoring of expenditures, and provision of account information.
