SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music will host an upcoming concert by The Dotys, a classical and crossover string duo comprised of faculty member Liesl Schoenberger Doty (violin) and her husband, Karl Doty (bass).
The concert will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. The Dotys will present works from the traditional folk repertoire, as well as some original tunes during the recital.
The performance comes on the heels of the couple’s recent GRAMMY Award nomination, as members of the innovative string orchestra, A Far Cry. A Far Cry’s latest album, “Visions and Variations,” was nominated for two awards in the 61st annual GRAMMYs, in the categories for best chamber music/small ensemble performance, and best engineered album, classical.
Liesl Schoenberger Doty is an assistant professor of violin at The Crane School of Music, and Karl Doty is a lecturer on double bass and bass guitar at Dartmouth College.
This concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the performers:
Though originally from quaint Cape Girardeau, Mo., Liesl Schoenberger Doty’s career has taken her well beyond the banks of the Mississippi River. Hailed for her “magnetic presence,” Doty has performed across North America and Europe, appearing at major venues, including Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Weill Recital Hall, Zankel Hall, the Musikverein, the Kravis Center and the Kennedy Center. She performs actively as a soloist, having worked with several orchestras in the United States, and has also appeared as a recitalist and chamber musician in numerous festivals and concert series, including Yellow Barn, Skaneateles Chamber Music Festival, Ottawa Chamberfest, White Mountain Chamber Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, New Music New Haven, Chamber Music at Yale, Orford Centre d’Arts, Sommerakademie Mozarteum in Salzburg and Ferme de Villefavard in France. As a crossover artist, she released three commercial fiddle albums in collaboration with the musical legends Buddy Spicher and David Grier, and has appeared as a guest artist at the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, Tenn. Since 2009, Doty has been featured as a soloist in composer/pianist Eric Genuis’ national tours. In 2012, she became a Crier in Boston’s own chair-less, conductor-less chamber orchestra, A Far Cry, and has enjoyed touring, recording and collaborating with all 16 of her co-artistic directors in the collective. Her favorite “crier” in the orchestra is her husband, bassist Karl Doty, with whom she performs regularly as part of their classical and crossover duo, The Dotys. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Indiana University and an Artist Diploma from Yale University, and is currently a candidate in the Doctor of Musical Arts program at New England Conservatory. Before joining Crane, Doty held faculty appointments at Dartmouth College, the University of New Hampshire, Saint Anselm College and Southeast Missouri State University. She is currently assistant professor of violin at The Crane School of Music. Liesl plays a 1919 Carl Becker violin.
Born and raised in Duluth, Minn., Karl Doty is one of the most versatile bassists of his generation. Passionate about the musical idiom of the chamber orchestra, he is a founding member of the GRAMMY-nominated self-conducted orchestra, A Far Cry, and enjoys frequent collaborations with groups like the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke's, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and New Century Chamber Orchestra. Being versed in different musical languages, Doty has shared the stage with Edgar Meyer, Väsen, Darol Anger, Mr. Sun, K2 and Morning Zephyr, as well as with his wife, champion fiddler Liesl Doty, in their duo, The Dotys. Though the bass isn't the most common concerto instrument, Karl has performed as a soloist with orchestras all over the country, as well as at home and on national tour with A Far Cry. Summer appearances regularly include performances with the North Country Chamber Players at the White Mountain Chamber Music Festival, Halcyon and Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festivals, with previous engagements at Ottawa Chamberfest, Verbier, Schleswig-Holstein, Newport Music Festival, Chautauqua and Skaneateles Chamber Music Festival. Karl received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music. Previous faculty bass appointments include Bates College, the Bennington Chamber Music Conference and Crane Youth Music. He is currently on faculty at Dartmouth College.
