Echoes of an earlier pandemic Given the sweep of the 1918 influenza pandemic, dubbed the “Spanish flu” in popular media at the time, it may seem odd to find that the ordeal barely garnered a mention (just one sentence, in fact) in that year’s Potsdam Normal School senior class book—sandwiched between gaily references to the busy social calendar of the time.

Notes From the “New Territory”
Editor’s Note: March 23rd marked the start of all online classes at SUNY Potsdam, the continuing journey toward our academic goals and with these, a test of our collective will and capacity. In hopes of reminding everyone of the themes which unite us in our new challenges, our campus community members are offering snapshots into their own personal “new territory.” One benefit of these posts is that they may help us learn new methods and gain ideas from each other.
Alcohol Awareness
As an educational institution, SUNY Potsdam believes that the best approach to avoiding the risks of alcohol consumption is education. You have to take personal responsibility for yourself and sometimes for your friends.
Department Name Change
Effective Date: March 22, 2017 All department or office name changes must be approved by President’s Council. The petitioner must present a detailed rationale for the proposed name change to the supervising academic dean or vice president for President’s Council review. Once approved by the President's Council, the new name will be formally announced to the campus community by the President's Office.

Animal Policy
In an effort to insure an atmosphere conducive to academic pursuits and to comply with existing state and local laws, the following animal policy shall be in effect: Service animals, as provided for under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and comfort, emotional support and companionship animals, as provided for under the Fair Housing Act in the Residence Halls only, are excluded from the provision of this policy. In an effort to make writing for external audiences less complicated, while promoting one consistent professional style for the College, we have developed the SUNY Potsdam Editorial Style Guide. Many of the entries in this guide follow the latest edition of the Associated Press Stylebook, which is the industry standard for most journalists.
