Energy

Geologists in the energy sector are responsible for powering our world and provide us with the light, heat, electricity and transportation that the modern world depends on. The largest employers are still petroleum and natural gas companies, however renewable energy (e.g. wind, solar, geothermal) is a fast-growing area of employment for geologists.

Environment

Geologists and other environmental scientists are employed by public and private entities to make sure that human interactions with the planet are clean, safe, and sustainable. Jobs in the environmental sector are focused on prevention, identification, and remediation of environmental contamination (e.g. acid mine drainage, industrial and domestic waste, radioactive contamination, etc.).

Water

Geologists, environmental scientists and hydrologists study streams, rivers and ground water systems to solve problems related to water pollution, water availability and storage, and flooding. These jobs can involve both laboratory and field work and deploy both field measurements and computer modeling to make predictions about water systems. Common employment options include private companies as well as state and federal governmental agencies.
