Forging a Unique Path
As her fellow soldiers catch some shut-eye in the middle of the night, Olivia Krytus ’26 remains alert, her eyes wide open during Fire Watch with the Army National Guard. “You see it in the movies. You can't have a base completely asleep, so there are always two guards watching. We have an hour-long shift at any point during the night,” she explained.
Redefined at Crane
As her first year at The Crane School of Music drew to a close, amidst studying for finals and packing up for summer, Johanna Saint-Vil ’25 donned a periwinkle satin dress and joined twenty of her friends in a residence hall lounge. The fellow students wore similar formal attire—black tuxes and velvet mini-dresses—perfectly primed for prom.
Discovering her Artistic Path
With her sketchbook, pencils and markers tucked under her pillow, Marie Amell ’21 waited for silence to fall on her childhood home, and for her parents to fall asleep, before clicking on her flashlight and beginning her art projects within the cave created by her sheets. Her studio expanded when she enrolled at SUNY Potsdam, working within the walls of Brainerd Hall as she pursued a degree in studio art.
Crane to the World: Vallejo’s Journey
With her violin nestled under her chin and her bow gliding steadily across the strings, Jessie Vallejo ’07 brings mariachi music to life at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Performing as part of a COVID-relief fundraiser for CORE, a global humanitarian organization co-founded by Sean Penn and Ann Lee, the spotlight feels like second nature to her now.
