History of RCFIn Fall 2021, SUNY Potsdam partnered with NY-DOCCS Riverview Correctional Facility to offer a bachelor’s degree program within the prison. We began with three instructors, teaching four courses to 19 students. As of Spring 2026, the program has 83 students, and we are offering 21 unique courses. In October 2025, Potsdam@RCF celebrated the commencement of 24 students who will soon complete their bachelor’s degree. 

As hockey players from the U.S., Japan, Canada, Great Britain, and Korea faced off at Maxcy Hall during the 2023 FISU World University Games, Melanie Heidman ’25 monitored the action from a press box high above the ice, carefully tracking shots on goal and other important stats for the international event.

In a hole, surrounded by layers of exposed soil in a 2-meter-long excavation unit, SUNY Potsdam junior Michael Madeiros ’19 uses a trowel to dig for artifacts on abolitionist John Brown’s farm. As he digs deeper and removes soil—to later be screened for artifacts—he discovers a fully intact glass bottle, just one of many items found while methodically examining the ground around John Brown’s house.

Home of the Potsdam BearsThe Maxcy Hall Athletic Complex is the home of the Potsdam Bears and our 17 Division III sports teams. Just outside Maxcy Hall is the all-weather Turf Field, surrounded by a quarter-mile track. At the heart of Maxcy is the 2,500-seat Ice Arena, home to our hockey teams, plus the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium, which seats 3,600 people. Maxcy also offers an Olympic-sized swimming pool, plus a Fieldhouse, complete with an indoor rock climbing wall. The Shane T.
