Peer Counselors

Peer counselors are paraprofessionals who work with students in need of support, under close supervision of licensed professional counselors. They adhere to the same confidentiality policies as professional counselors. Peer Counselors are available during variable hours, Monday-Friday, while classes are in session. They can offer prompt and helpful support to fellow students. PCs are located in the Counseling Center in 131 Van Housen Hall, and are available to meet in-person by appointment or walk-in (walk-ins are dependent on availability).

Research & Academia

People employed in academic and research positions can explore the questions that interest them the most! From studying dinosaurs to volcanoes, academics and research scientists are tasked with advancing human knowledge about the natural world. Those who pursue this route should be self-motivated, curious, and creative. Most research positions are in universities, museums, national parks, and some governmental and private laboratories. Research scientist must have graduate degrees and most have their doctoral degrees.

Seeing the future through the past

Perched on a boulder still black from the fires of her ancestors, Marla Jacobs ’20 found what she had been looking for. Through an archaeology field school arranged by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Department of Economic Development, Jacobs had been trained to find traces of the past, as a field technician investigating archaeological concerns often linked to development projects in Ontario. The artifacts pulsed with life. They told stories that Jacobs, an Akwesasne Mohawk, had to follow, and they helped set the course to her future.

Crafting a Horror Show

Perfectly in sync with the Halloween season, the Department of Theatre and Dance brought the classic zombie film “Night of the Living Dead” to the stage with five performances between Oct. 27 and Oct. 30. Leading up to the show, students and faculty were busy working behind-the-scenes as they designed the set, rehearsed their lines, selected their costumes, and learned the nuances of applying stage makeup.

The Performing Arts Center houses SUNY Potsdam's acclaimed Department of Theatre and Dance, and connects to The Crane School of Music. The 97,000-square-foot facility is one of the best performance venues north of New York City, with a 350-seat proscenium theater, a 200-seat black box theater and a 200-seat dance performance hall.

Permanent Art Collection

The Permanent Art Collection is owned by The Potsdam College Foundation and is offered to the SUNY Potsdam community as a unique resource to the campus and surrounding region. The Collection comprises approximately 2,300 objects and is rich in Mid-20th Century Modern and Contemporary Art. When possible, The Permanent Collection is displayed in The Gibson and Hosmer Galleries.
