‘Best Job I’ve Ever Had’
As she fastens her silver necklace, Kate Favaro ’13 reflects on some of the most cherished memories of the good times spent with her grandmother throughout her youth.“I wear it when I wake up and I miss her a little bit more. I grew up on Loon Lake, and she did too. She had given me this necklace before she started to fail. When she first died, I wore it every day as a habit because I wanted to feel that closeness, but it has much more meaning when I put it on now. Now in my job, I know I wear it on certain days because it has become a ritual,” Favaro said.
Motherhood and Education
As she handles the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood, Elizabeth Criscitello ’22 has faced the challenges of adulthood much quicker than many of her classmates at SUNY Potsdam. Engaged at the end of freshman year, married the following year, and then giving birth to her baby, Giovanna, in the spring of 2020, she has continued to balance parenting with her educational goals as she pursues dual degrees in English writing and community health.
Learning to Fly
As she holds her falconry glove in the air, releasing a red-tailed hawk into the woods, Sasha Truax ’25 watches from a distance as the bird learns to hunt for the first time. A licensed falconry apprentice since the age of 15, Sasha has been making a positive impact in the world of conservationism as she supports young birds dealing with the harsh winter conditions in the Northeast.
Musically Driven
As she pulls the microphone close and hits record, Tatiana Merced ’24 captures audio for her “Musically Driven” podcast series—part of a multi-year presidential scholars project to examine how people of color have shaped the fabric of music history. “Every semester has been focused on a different culture of music. This semester I’m really focused on Black music, this summer it’s going to be Hispanic heritage music, and then I want to get into Asian music the following semester,” Merced explained.
Road Warrior
As she rides her bicycle along a 12-mile stretch of State Route 37 between Ogdensburg and Alexandria Bay, Emily Yousey’s eyes scan the road for signs of roadkill. She rounds a corner and quickly stops as a raccoon comes into sight—one of the many animals inadvertently losing its life to passing cars in Northern New York.
‘A Transformative Journey’
As she steps inside the prison and the bars clank behind her, Ayisha Khalid ’24 enters a world unlike anything she has seen before.

Whiteface Mountain
Shrouded in clouds on all sides, Maddie LoDico, a freshman in SUNY Potsdam’s Environmental Studies major, hikes past alpine vegetation on her way to the top of Whiteface Mountain. It’s early September, but you wouldn’t know it by the nip in the air and strong winds whipping past the mountaintop. She is bundled from head to toe with a winter hat, a bright yellow waterproof hood and wool gloves, as she scrambles over a rocky path to the top of the Adirondack summit.
