Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

Accommodative Services provides academic accommodations for all students who have documented learning, emotional and/or physical disabilities. Accommodations can include such services as note takers, text readers/e-text, exam readers/scribes, classroom relocation and extended time and/or distraction-reduced environment for exams.

Faculty are encouraged to include in their syllabi a simple statement (View Course Syllabi Statement Options website) inviting any students who may feel that they need accommodations based on a documented disability to make an appointment to discuss it after class or during office hours. This helps both to preserve the student's privacy and to indicate the faculty member's willingness to make reasonable modifications. Students should be referred to Accommodative Services for the development of an Accommodation Plan. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 have mandated that all campuses receiving federal aid provide accommodations.

Please view Accommodation Arrangements (PDF) to understand how accommodations are made at SUNY Potsdam, including information on faculty involvement and exams.
