SUNY Potsdam Celebrates the Incoming Class of 2030 & Greets Returning Students for Fall Semester

SUNY Potsdam will welcome new and returning students with Welcome Weekend events from Aug. 27 to 30, including orientation and team-building activities in the Academic Quad. Fall 2026 classes begin on Monday, Aug. 31.

SUNY Potsdam is proud to welcome its 210th class of new students as the Class of 2030 is set to arrive on campus next week, joining returning students for a fall semester marked by new academic programs, major campus upgrades and a Welcome Weekend celebration featuring fireworks, a carnival and more traditions.

“There is nothing quite like the excitement that arrives with a new semester. From the moment students move into their residence halls and gather for Welcome Weekend, our campus comes alive with possibility. We are delighted to welcome the Class of 2030 and our returning students to a year filled with new opportunities for growth, creativity and connection,” said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. Suzanne R. Smith.

New academic opportunities

This fall, students will find new opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, with SUNY Potsdam expanding academic offerings designed to meet workforce needs and increase access for learners at every stage of life.

  • The new Bachelor of Science degree in physical education blends Pre-K to 12 teaching preparation with immersive field experiences, equipping graduates to inspire lifelong wellness and active lifestyles in diverse school settings.
  • The Crane School of Music is now offering a fully online option for its longstanding graduate program in music education as well, expanding access to one of the nation’s most respected programs in the field.
  • Adding to SUNY Potsdam’s growing list of online graduate programs, the College has also launched a Master of Science in Teaching degree in inclusive and special education—designed to allow career changers and recent college graduates to achieve initial certification in the rewarding and growing field.

SUNY Potsdam is continuing to expand access to its portfolio of microcredentials, providing focused, workforce-ready training for both degree-seeking students and adult learners. Through a new partnership with the New York Municipal Empowerment Foundation, scholarships are now available for participants seeking to complete microcredentials focused on careers in local government.

SUNY Potsdam welcomes new students with its New Student Funnel every fall, with faculty and staff gathering to cheer on new first-year and transfer students as they arrive on campus. This year’s event will be held on Friday, Aug. 28 at 8:30 a.m.

Campus enhancements

The final phase of renovations in the Maxcy Hall Fieldhouse is nearly complete, with the installation of new flooring, a running/walking track, ceilings and lighting. An indoor turf field will also be installed in the Fieldhouse in the winter months. This project also includes the installation of an elevator, improving access between the two floors, while also integrating the College’s brand identity. A new dance studio has been renovated, and a bouldering cave was added in this round of updates to the Maxcy Hall Athletic Complex.

The new WISER (Wagner Institute for Sustainability and Ecological Research) Botanical Gardens now grace the green space outside the WISER Greenhouse. This fully donor-funded space features a sustainably-harvested forever redwood pergola, accessible pathways and a native plant demonstration garden, thanks to the generosity of Robert Wagner ’75 and Wendy Wagner (Hon. ’17).

Campus crews are nearing completion on the first major renovations to the Revetta Planetarium in Stowell Hall since it was first opened in 1964. The long-awaited upgrades include accessible entrances, new furniture, updated interior finishes, and most importantly, a state-of-the-art projection system, suitable for an array of planetarium shows, as well as other immersive and educational programming.

Following last year’s demolition of Dunn Hall, the south edge of the Academic Quad is also being transformed this fall into a welcoming outdoor retreat, informed by student input—adding covered seating, a fire pit, gathering areas and additional landscaping and plantings.

Students will also return to new roofs on the Townhouse complex, as well as renovated classroom spaces. The steam and chilled water lines in the Academic Quad are currently being replaced in a phased process, allowing all heating and cooling to be maintained while infrastructure is updated.

Welcome Weekend

Beyond the new facilities and academic opportunities, SUNY Potsdam's longstanding traditions will help welcome students and families to campus for the start of the academic year. Welcome Weekend 2026 is set for Thursday, Aug. 27 to Sunday, Aug. 30.

The incoming Class of 2030 will arrive on Thursday, Aug. 27. First-year students and their families will be buzzing around campus and the village on move-in day. SUNY Potsdam will host its Sundaes with Suzanne and Student Services Fair from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, acquainting students and families with campus life over ice cream sundaes, thanks to support from the Stewart’s Foundation. That evening, the campus will host an event featuring fireworks, s’mores and outdoor games in Marshall Park, beginning at 9 p.m.

New students will be greeted by faculty, staff and upperclassmen during the New Student Funnel the following morning, on Friday, Aug. 28 at 8:30 a.m., in Minerva Plaza. Campus community members will cheer on the long line of new students, as they walk to Orientation in the Academic Quad. Orientation will run throughout Friday and Saturday, acclimating students to campus and the community.

The celebrations will continue Sunday, Aug. 30, with the annual Welcome Weekend Carnival open to students, faculty, staff and families, from 1 to 5 p.m., in the Maxcy Hall Fieldhouse. The carnival will feature games, activities, food, open skate and open swim sessions to kick off the academic year.

The Fall 2026 semester kicks off on Monday, Aug. 31, with classes commencing in the morning.
