The Young Improviser
Before even attending SUNY Potsdam, you may have heard Joshua Barkley ’21 playing the accordion for his high school production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” the saxophone in his high school marching band, electric bass in a local country music group, or the organ at church on Sunday. A man of many talents, Barkley is most known as a jazz pianist who plays the piano on the fly and improvises his music more than sticking strictly to sheet music.
Genevieve Ruhland ’18
Before Genevieve Ruhland ’18 wrapped up her double major in music education and math this year, she directed a 70-minute experimental percussion performance in the Academic Quad—a project that allowed her to explore less mainstream percussion music as part of her Presidential Scholars research.

Reaching For The Stars
Before working remotely, Jamie Szafran ’08 was greeted at her employer’s security gate each day with a sign saying “Welcome to Kennedy Space Center.” After twelve years, she has still found herself staring at it in awe, incredulously reminding herself that she works for NASA. “The weight and prestige of NASA is something that you can’t ignore,” Szafran says. “There is a sense of wonder, which hits a little harder for those of us who grew up nowhere near rockets and space and all of this.”
Guidance for Human Subject Research
