In some ways, Jake Winters ’24 is your typical college student—passionate about his major, dealing with loud roommates, and anxious about what his future will hold after graduation. But unlike most of his SUNY Potsdam classmates, Winters’ campus is located entirely behind prison walls, as he completes his degree and his sentence at Riverview Correctional Facility in Ogdensburg, N.Y.

Sometimes, Angella St. Denis ’21 dreams of all the sleep she will catch up on—hours and hours of uninterrupted slumber awaiting her someday in the not-so-distant future—once she finally graduates, once she finally lands that career helping young people, once she finally finds a bit of inner peace after years of seeking justice. But for now, she continues to toil night and day, in pursuit of her degree and of her dreams.

Sporting jeans and a yellow jacket, and exuding a self-proclaimed hippie vibe, Claudia (Kaufmann) Mengel ’76 walked into the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in Rochester, N.Y. to open a checking account back in 1977. After sitting down to fill out the paperwork, the then-22-year-old scanned the room, looking at all the empty walls. She wondered why they didn’t have any artwork on display—something that was disconcerting for a recent SUNY Potsdam graduate with a degree in art.
