D.Phil. University of Oxford, 2000 I am a sociocultural anthropologist with research interests in expressive and symbolic culture; especially the anthropology of art, museum anthropology, and engaged anthropology-with an evolving focus on the anthropology of climate change. Beginning with extensive fieldwork in China spanning several decades, my work on the intersections between traditional and contemporary art has become increasingly global, bringing together issues concerning consumption and material culture, globalization and social change, migration and refugees, environmental art, and the subtle intersection between shared and restricted knowledge. I aspire towards collaborations-between students and teachers, artists and anthropologists-and applied learning to develop creative, cross-cultural forms of engagement to envision and create a humane climate and future. Primary Current Project: Museums Without Borders is comprised of several past and ongoing collaborative exhibitions developed through a collective of anthropologists, artists and museum curators. While topics have varied, its current priority is to engage with the climate crisis by uniting the unique qualities of anthropology, art and museums through displays beyond the conventional spaces of museums. We seek to identify innovative ways to help create a humane climate, broadly defined. Selected Publications: "'A Hundred Ways to Learn' About Zhang Hongtu." 2015. I have been working in the helping professions since 2002 when I first began teaching and guiding in an adventure therapy program for at-risk youth. Since then, various experiences in residential treatment programs, inpatient chemical dependency, as well as private practice have allowed me to continue to learn treatment methods which help clients achieve their goals. As a member of SUNY Potsdam's Counseling Center since 2007, I enjoy combining cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, as well as a good dose of humor in my work with clients. While psychotherapy is serious business, I believe it does not have to be somber. I'm a big proponent of self-care for all of my clients. I do my best to practice this myself in the form of rock and ice climbing, trail running, gardening, and spending time with my family. If you are feeling challenged with any number of issues, don't hesitate to reach out to see what we can do together to help you become the best possible version of yourself. My name is Tanya Dow, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of NY. I have been working with college students for most of my professional career, including academic counseling, advising, and mental health counseling. I have been working at SUNY Potsdam for the past 18 years. I enjoy supporting students in their efforts to become happier, more fulfilled, and more comfortable with their sense of self as they navigate this transitional time in life. I hope to provide my students with a space to explore and work towards positive change utilizing approaches such as CBT, Positive Psychology, and Person-Centered therapy, among others. Some of the things I enjoy doing to support my own mental health include working out, spending time outdoors, and expressing my creativity with home and garden DIY projects. I look forward to meeting you. More Info about Counselor, LMHC Tanya K. Dow |

After a brief stint with SUNY Canton in the Admissions Office, I took on a position in the Public Relations Department. While in that role, I worked closely with the director of public relations on a variety of projects that promoted the institution, including being the direct liaison on a national presidential search. Eager to work more closely with the student body, I joined the counseling department here at SUNY Potsdam in 2018. As the first point of contact for our students in need, I am grateful for the opportunity to help them find their way gently and compassionately to one of our incredible counselors. When not in the office, I enjoy singing, traveling, spending time on and by the water and relaxing with my family. More Info about Administrative Assistant 1 Ellen M Prashaw |

I'm a Potsdam local who graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from SUNY Potsdam before moving on to earn my Master's in Social Work at CUA. As a graduate student, I completed an internship at the SUNY Potsdam Counseling Center. I enjoyed my time working with the students and staff here so much that after graduating with my MSW, I began working here. I began practicing as a Licensed Master Social Worker in August 2019 and plan to continue toward further licensure in the future. I am interested in and continue to learn more about trauma-based therapies. In my free time, I enjoy movies, reading, baking, and hiking. You'll often see me accompanied by my golden retriever, Richard, who also shares my interest in helping others. More Info about Counselor, LMSW Genevieve R Ramsay |

My Professional Background Hi! I am Amy Richardson. I am the Director of Counseling at SUNY Potsdam. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and I received my Master's Degree from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2004. Over the past 17 years I have had a variety of experiences in the mental health field. I began my career as a Crisis Intervention Counselor and Rape Crisis Counselor at a local Crisis Center while working for AmeriCorps. From there I spent approximately 8 years at Clarkson University as the Assistant Director of Counseling and First Year Seminar Coordinator. Recently, I have spent the past 3 years as the Mental Health Program Director at our local County Mental Health Clinic, and 4 years prior to that as a counselor there. I would describe my treatment approach as holistic, integrative and person centered. I believe therapy is a collaborative process where the therapist is someone to walk with you, side by side, to help explore and determine the best path to take. I feel that therapy should be tailored to the individual's needs and personal circumstances. My experience has taught me that no problem is too big or too small to face when you have someone to face it together with. I have various experience in anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, relational issues, LGBTQ, as well as other areas. I am formally trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). I received a Bachelor's in psychology from SUNY Potsdam in 1996 and a Master's in counseling with a Student Affairs emphasis from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1998. I have been working in counseling related fields for my entire 22 year career, including the St. Lawrence County Mental Health Clinic, Hospice of the St. Lawrence Valley, SUNY Potsdam TRiO Counselor and the SUNY Canton Counseling Center. I love my job and feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to work with SUNY Potsdam students. The amazing energy and diversity regarding life experience and perspective is truly inspiring. I work from a very person-centered approach and pull from a variety of counseling approaches. The opportunity to build meaningful, therapeutic relationships has made counseling an incredibly fulfilling profession, for which I am extremely grateful. I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and pets, reading, gardening, various crafts and working on my home. More Info about Counselor, LMHC Christina M Snell |
