I have a PhD in Arabic Language and Literature from Indiana University and PhD in French Language and Literatures from McGill University. I teach both French and Arabic and my research interests are in the French and Arabic literature of North Africa, in particular Tunisia, where I served two years in the Peace Corps. I am also actively involved in teaching methods and creative use of instructional technology. I have taught at the University of Maine, Canton College, Potsdam High School, Saint Lawrence University, and played many roles at SUNY Potsdam since 1981, from Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, to Director of International Education, while always offering courses in French, Arabic, and ESL. Since 2006, I have devoted my time to teaching in the Modern language Department. I have won a number of grants to provide professional development for language teachers in New York State, as well as grants to bring international scholars to SUNY Potsdam, including a MEPI Middle East Program Initiative, and I am currently organizing an annual conference, with a colleague at Saint Lawrence University, for language teachers of the North Country. Committed to the importance of international exchange and immersion experiences in language and culture for our students, I have organized a field trip to Montreal every semester for our language students. I have taught six short-term travel courses to North Africa, three to Tunisia and three to Morocco, winning a Chancellor's Award for the last Morocco course on Women and Democracy in Morocco. My team-taught January 2020 course with Allonah Ezrowill took students to Spain and Morocco and explored the flourishing of cultures in Moorish Spain and contemporary issues in Morocco. http://www2.potsdam.edu/mcguirjp/index.htmDr. McGuire is new to the North Country, a native Long Islander, an avid Yankee fan, and a political junkie. His teaching and research interests include state and local government, intergovernmental relations, and interest group politics. He is currently working on two research projects examining different facets of intergovernmental relations, the first studies intra-state relations and the implementation of the 2002 Help America Vote Act and the second investigates informal and formal means of state and local government cooperation. Before making his way to SUNY Potsdam he earned a Ph.D. from Washington State University and taught politics at Gonzaga University and Wabash College. Teaching at Potsdam is a coming home of sorts; it puts him in closer proximity to his New England based family and friends. Dr. McGuire is happy to join the faculty at Potsdam College because he believes we provide students with unique opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty and study in an environment that's committed to academic excellence. The classes he teaches include: Introduction to U.S. Politics; State and Local Government (w/ a New York and environmental politics focus); The Congress and Legislative Process; The American Presidency; U.S. Media and Politics; Parties, Elections, and Interest Groups; and Environmental Politics and Policy. Students interested in these classes or collaborating on a research project are encouraged to speak to Dr. McGuire. More Info |

Dunn Hall 396 I have had the opportunity to work as an instructor with SUNY Potsdam's Business Administration department since 2011. I specialize in instructional design and education technology. My primary goal is to expose students to a range of technical tools to develop their skills for work in a teaching or business position. I often learn as much as my students do in each class. A big part of my philosophy is that we are all in this together and we should work to support, have fun, and grow together professionally. My courses are very "hands-on", as I believe that learning is an active process which can lead to lasting changes and that by "doing" learners will gain valuable experience for the work place. I currently work as an Instructional Designer for SUNY Potsdam in the Center for Creative Instruction. This role consists of working closely with hundreds of faculty to create online courses and programs aligned to the SUNY Open Course Quality Review (OSCQR) standards, developing training materials, testing new software, and providing overall pedagogical and technical support to faculty. I also have a life-long passion for games and learning. Recently I designed and managed contests for the National Education Foundation (NEF) using Minecraft: Education Edition where I worked with participants from all over the world. I also manage and design websites, Learning Management Systems, and do course design work for the NEF. My passion for gaming and learning stems from being an athlete and a former professional gamer. I competed at the highest level in several video games between 2010-2016 and was able to publish an article in Ed Tech magazine relating my experience to culture and learning. I hope to use my roles here to integrate technology, and the culture surrounding it's use, into pedagogy to promote the continuing evolution of our campus and society.
