As lightning and thunder streak and rattle through the night sky, Dr. Karen Davis enters a small wooden hut to comfort a pack of wolves. A scary proposition for many, but Davis is unfazed as she hunkers down in the rain-drenched enclosure.

Combating Disease Through Education

Like an antibiotic rapidly flowing through the blood stream to combat an infection, Whitney Callaghan ’17 & ’21 has used her knowledge to help fight the spread of diseases in Northern New York. The SUNY Potsdam alumna took her degree in community health and parlayed it into a career with the St. Lawrence County Department of Public Health—an especially meaningful position in the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Finding her Voice

Like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, Kiara Espinal ’21 has gone through her own metamorphosis at SUNY Potsdam, transitioning from an introverted first-year student, to a leader at the college. “I used to be one of those quiet kids, I didn't say a lot as a child,” Espinal said. “I've always had that drive to want to speak up, and I finally found the space to do that when I came to college. The professors said, ‘You can do it, I'm going to support you no matter what.’”

Ahead of the Game

Like clockwork, Jessica Evans ’24 landed on the President’s List every semester during her undergraduate years at SUNY Potsdam. The high-achieving graduate recently received her degree in business administration and launched a career as a real estate agent and freelance photographer—two professions that she said will afford her the perfect work-life balance. 

Becoming a Literacy Leader

Like a lighthouse, directing ships to safety through stormy seas, Karina Antonio ’20 & ’22 has assumed a similar role as a mentor for children navigating through an ocean of uncertainty with the English language.
