Policy on Course Loads for Undergraduate Students

The following policies apply for fall and spring semesters to students in all three schools: Arts and Sciences, Education and Professional Studies, and The Crane School of Music.

  • Part-time = 0-11 semester hours

  • Full-time = 12-19 semester hours (including P.E. experiences)

  • Overload = above 19 semester hours (including P.E. experiences)

Overload Policy Defined

  1. The overload cannot exceed 21 hours. In extraordinary circumstances deans may consider exceptions to this policy.
  2. The minimum GPA to apply for an overload is 3.0.

  3. Only sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply for an overload.

  4. Overloads can be entered in the Registrar's Office after the end of the initial registration period each semester.

Applying for an Overload

  • Students must complete an overload form, available in the Deans' offices, including the signature of adviser and appropriate dean or designee.

  • Students must state their reasons for needing the overload on this form. Deans' reasons for granting or denying students' requests will also be recorded on this form.
